Scolding the corridor girls

Four hours’ sleep after a manic couple of days at work, including a late-night report to complete. A flight across the Atlantic. Straight into discussions and projects with my business partner in NYC. On to dinner – via an agreeable (if snowy) diversion to a Barnes & Noble. Back to my hotel. Managing to stay awake until 9.30pm – the middle of the night back home – then crashing into the deepest sleep.

Plenty of experience tells me that I’m not great with jetlag on my first two nights on foreign shores in different time zones. So to be [...]

Caught at the fair

There was a reasonably large police presence at the Michaelmas Fair I visited last weekend. Not that there was any trouble, you understand, but high jinks are inevitable at such events – and the occasional villain might hope to seize the opportunity to pick a pocket or two. The behaviour of some suggested that alcohol had been flowing fairly freely, too – sometimes for those who might not have attained the necessary age to purchase or consume it.

I rather suspect that the fair’s C18th Charter might have envisaged such antics, and introduced special measures to deal with them. Clearly, [...]

The Academy

How about this for a door, passed on a stroll through Bloomsbury recently:

See above the door? ‘The Academy’. Plain and simple. No need for extra detail – the girls sent there for education (and, perhaps, reform) would know all about it. “If that caning doesn’t teach you a lesson, I’ll send you to The Academy”, perhaps?

(Actually, it’s a hotel. And, having stayed there a few years ago, a rather disappointing one. But there’s no hint of that from the outside…!)

The mass caning

I did a bad, bad thing flying back from Schiphol last week: I went into McDonald’s. My excuse? A quiet place to sit; power sockets to recharge my phone; a dire need for an energy kick from a McFlurry to keep me awake til my flight.

The seating area was host to a group of girls from a posh English school, all wearing matching tracksuits emblazoned with the school crest and name and the dates of their Dutch tour. They were in high spirits, but actually rather sweet.

Instead, I imagined a less well-behaved group disturbing their fellow diners, one [...]

The price of admission

Walking through the centre of Utrecht – one of my very favourite cities – late on Monday night, I spied an interesting sight.

Old, traditional building. Wood-panelled dining room. Candles on the tables. Gentlemen, all in their 60s or older, all wearing black tie. Glasses of wine being sipped, at the end of dinner.

The scene was set, it seemed, for the evening’s entertainment. The young ladies would be brought in, in black corsets and matching stockings – for the provision of a suitable girl would be the admission price for each of the society’s members.

Lots would be drawn, [...]
